The benefits of a pleasure reading habit outweigh the dangers that some have stated come with independent reading. This paper aims to prove that the benefits include an extended vocabulary, cultivating social skills, and being confident in one’s self. The ability to choose what book to read allows a person of any age the knowledge that no one has told them what to read. When someone is told what to read, the desire to read it lessens; however, when the decision of what to read is made by the reader alone, the book becomes more enjoyable. Reading shapes the lives of children as they grow through school. Reading also cultivates a want to write. Between these two, people become well-rounded in their vocabulary and social skills. Being able to choose what to read or write is what makes them confident in themselves and in their creations. Without a pleasure reading habit, children would not grow up ready to take on the world.
