Effects of Urbanization, Landuse, and Climate on Water Quality in Georgia
Abstract
The Clean Lakes Program has looked further into looking for all sources of runoff and facilities dumping waste in Lake Lanier. Many stations have been established in Atlanta, Ga in order to monitor consistent long-term stream water quality. Urbanization of Atlanta and its water has caused many effects, both short term and long term. Atlanta now takes from other lakes and areas outside the area in order to get clean water for citizens. Effects of Urbanization have impacted freshwater resources by increasing concentrations of ions, metals, nutrient species and coliform bacteria that can flow into rivers and streams with the effects of water quality, including marine life. The Savannah river is very toxic and pours into the ocean and can cause algae blooms. Nonpoint solutions will flow down streams affecting many cities that are downstream of the start of population. Water quality testing is important in urbanization because there are some simple procedures like constant concentration, regression, statistical, and more. Factor analysis shows that water quality has three components, stormwater runoff, discharges, and groundwater. They can be distinguished by using total suspended and dissolved solids. Barium, zinc, were the most abundant metals in lake Sidney lanier, the most important point of trace metals showed to be coming from large wastewater plants. Even though the increase in precipitation has granted us with higher water levels, there is still an abundance of garbage and trash among the shores of Lake Lanier and Georgia contaminating and decreasing the quality of water.
