Hollow Heroes

Most have heard the line, “So, what’s the point?” after having given an elaborative story but ultimately with no true meaning. Sadly many comic-book/superhero films face this dilemma today. From Greek myths to Comic books, superheroes serve as a way to convey life lessons or warnings. But with huge budgeting and blockbuster producing companies taking over the superhero genre, theme-driven narratives are now taking the backburner to CGI and explosive battles cheapening the experience and hollowing our characters. By looking at Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, DC’s Batman V. Superman Dawn of Justice, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War’s adaptation of Spiderman, and the Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Trilogy, the paper aims to show the eventual deterioration of story and character and exponential, growth of spectacle, and the benefits of “Comic Inspired” versus “Comic-Adapted.”
